Asbestos disposal locations

The following facilities currently accept asbestos waste in the Northern Territory. The waste disposal facilities are operated by the local councils who charge a fee and may have additional requirements before you can dispose of the asbestos.

The information on this page is only a guide and you should call the councils to confirm details before transporting asbestos to the facility.

City of Darwin

Facility: Shoal Bay Waste Management Facilities

Disposal Information:

  • Approval required, fill out the asbestos disposal application form (available online)
  • Approval needed prior to booking your disposal
  • Disposal fees apply
  • All asbestos waste contained in compliance with the NT WorkSafe How to Safely Remove Asbestos Code of Practice
  • Friable and non-friable asbestos waste must be doubled bagged or wrapped in 200 μm (minimum thickness) polythene bags or sheets
  • Residential or domestic sources are only permitted to dispose of 10m2 or less

Katherine Town Council

Facility: Katherine Town Council Waste Management Facility

Alice Springs Town Council

Nhulunbuy Corporation

Facility: Gove Peninsula Waste Management Facility
Location: Melville Bay Road, Nhulunbuy

Disposal Information:

  • Asbestos disposal facility only available for one week, twice a year (please contact the Waste
    Management Facility to confirm details)
  • All asbestos disposal must be pre-arranged in advance
  • The disposal pit will be open from 8am to 4pm daily during the week. Asbestos arriving
    outside this time will not be accepted
  • Asbestos must be double wrapped in 200 micron heavy duty builders plastic and taped to
    seal the asbestos completely
  • Quantities greater than 100 kilograms must be transported in a sealed container and on a
    pallet
  • Disposal fees apply and must be paid in advance
  • Only asbestos originating in the Gove Peninsula will be accepted
  • No individual or business is permitted to dispose of more than 15 tonnes of asbestos each
    calendar year

Commercial disposal option for small quantities of asbestos

The following companies hold an Environment Protection Licence from the EPA NT and provide a commercial service to disposal of small quantities of asbestos.

Each company may have additional requirements to the list below before accepting asbestos for disposal:

  • Disposal fee applies
  • Disposal must be pre-arranged in advance
  • Non-friable asbestos waste only
  • All asbestos waste contained in compliance with Section 4.8 of the NT WorkSafe How to Safely Remove Asbestos Code of Practice
