Legacy asbestos

Legacy asbestos debris can be found across the Northern Territory.

In the greater Darwin region, much of the asbestos debris is a result of damage sustained during World War II bombing and Cyclone Tracy.

Legacy asbestos can also be found in communities where the Commonwealth Government built housing or facilities.

If you find suspected legacy asbestos material you should leave it in place and contact the owner of the land. Land owners could include:

• Parks and Wildlife Commission of the NT – for Northern Territory Parks and coastal reserves
• Parks Australia – for National Parks
• Local Councils – for council parks, gardens, foreshores or lakeside areas
• Department of Infrastructure, Planning and Logistics – for road corridors

If you find legacy asbestos debris and do not know who owns the land you should contact the Department of Health - Environmental Health Branch for advice.

If you find newly dumped asbestos debris you should report it to the Northern Territory Environment Protection Authority.
