Businesses and Volunteers

If a volunteer carries out any type of work for a person conducting a business or undertaking (PCBU) that volunteer is considered a worker under the Work Health and Safety (National Uniform Legislation) Act 2011.

A PCBU has an obligation to ensure that volunteers and paid workers work in a safe and healthy workplace. Volunteers and workers must also ensure they take care for their own health and safety and the health and safety of others while at work.

A PCBU must ensure that an asbestos register is prepared for workplace buildings constructed before 31 December 2003 and an asbestos management plan is developed for asbestos identified in the workplace.

If personal protective equipment (PPE) is used to minimise risks to health and safety in the workplace the PCBU must provide it to paid workers and volunteers.

If you are volunteering you should:

  • carry out your tasks in a safe way
  • follow reasonable work health and safety instructions
  • wear any PPE you are provided
