Notification of asbestos removal

A licenced asbestos removalist must notify NT WorkSafe in writing at least five days before the asbestos removal work commences, unless immediate removal is required following an unexpected incident or emergency. If immediate removal is required NT WorkSafe must be notified by telephone, with written notification to follow within 24 hours.

An asbestos removal notification form is available on the NT WorkSafe website. Information that must be notified includes:

  • details of the licenced asbestos removalist
  • details of the supervisor who will oversee the removal work
  • details of the licenced asbestos assessor who will carry out air monitoring and issue the clearance certificate
  • client name and contact details
  • name of the person with management or control of the workplace
  • address of the workplace and specific asbestos removal location
  • date of notification
  • start date and estimated finish date of removal work
  • whether the asbestos to be removed is friable (Class A) or non-friable (Class B)
  • type of asbestos product being removed (for example asbestos cement sheeting, vinyl tiles, lagging, gaskets)
  • for friable asbestos, the way the removal area will be enclosed
  • estimated quantity of asbestos to be removed
  • number of workers who will perform the removal work and evidence that they are competent to carry out removal work
